Ander Herrera says PSG boss Thomas Tuchel has same style as his former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal – ‘football organised by position’

  • And the Spaniard compared Tuchel’s pragmatic style to his former manager

Paris Saint-Germain star Ander Herrera has drawn comparisons between Thomas Tuchel and his former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, revealing that the pair create teams ‘organised by position’.

Herrera featured under Van Gaal at Old Trafford for two years, but was critical of the veteran Dutchman’s tenure after struggling to become a key performer.

And after opting to move to the French capital in 2018 after his contract expired, Herrera believes that both Tuchel and Van Gaal operate with a similar pragmatic style of play.

‘In broad outline, he makes me think of van Gaal. He likes football organised by position,’ Herrera revealed to Stadio TV.

‘He has nothing to do, for example, with Marcelo Bielsa, a trainer who also favours attacking play, but who is looking for football in continuous movement, where you have to break the lines, go get the ball yourself.’

Herrera became Van Gaal’s first signing at United in the summer of 2014, committing to a four-year deal, but made 70 appearances across all competitions during the 68-year-old’s reign and failed to establish himself as a regular starter.

Van Gaal steered United to the Champions League in his first campaign in charge, but was sacked just a year later despite the club clinching the FA Cup.

The former Holland boss was maligned for his rigid tactical philosophy during his time in the Premier League, and Tuchel has also had similar critics amid rumours that PSG may look for a change in the dugout once again soon.

Herrera has endured an injury-plagued first campaign in the French capital, but featured throughout PSG’s title defence and progression to the Champions League quarter-finals.

The midfielder labelled the desire for success within the club as a ‘total obligation’.

He added: ‘The requirement that there is in Paris, I had never known it before.

‘Here, winning is a total obligation, otherwise, it is a tragedy. We lost 2 -1 in Dortmund. In the Champions League, it was a good away result.

‘But it was considered an absolute tragedy. In the return, the group cohesion was incredible and it gave us the victory. ‘
