Garbutt himself, who spoke highly of the club upon his release on Tuesday, laughed off Ancelotti’s reaction on Twitter, saying: ‘Don’t get it twisted I chose to find the funny side other players would feel disrespected by the club and the manager.’
In another tweet, he said; ‘It’s not his [Ancelotti’s] fault it’s the clubs however it’s a belter though.’
Earlier in the day, Garbutt had wished the club ‘good luck’ for the future after his contract expired, tweeting: ‘Today officially my contract at Everton has now expired after been at the club for 11 years!
‘The club has been a huge part of my life, and one I had huge pride to represent. There’s been many ups and a few downs which I couldn’t control. Everton good luck for the future.’
Garbutt opted to see the funny side of Ancelotti’s reaction rather than take it seriously
He added: ‘I will continue to follow the football club moving forward. Also a special mention to the fans of the football club which have been unreal towards me nobody deserves success more than you guys!’
Fans on Twitter generally defended Ancelotti over his confusion when asked about Garbutt, with one saying: ‘Carlo has probably never met Luke.’
Garbutt made his Premier League debut as a substitute against Southampton in April 2014, and played 10 times in the 2014-15 season under Roberto Martinez.
Garbutt made 11 appearances for England Under 21s and went on loan to six different clubs
A month later, he made his debut for England Under-21s, making 11 appearances in total at that level.
But since that season under Martinez, he has been out on loan to six different clubs: Cheltenham Town, Colchester, Fulham, Wigan, Oxford Utd and Ipswich.
This season, Garbutt made 28 appearances for Ipswich in League One, scoring five league goals.
