The battle goes on for Jimmy Greaves’ gong: 357 goals in English top-flight but still no MBE – Sportsmail continue to fight for recognition legendary striker deserves after 80-year-old was left out of Queen’s birthday honours

  • Sportsmail pushed for Greaves to be honoured for his contribution to football
  • Greaves, who is 80 year old, is the greatest scorer in English top-flight history
  • He scored 357 goals for Chelsea, Spurs and West Ham, 44 in 57 internationals

Sportsmail will continue to campaign for Jimmy Greaves to be honoured for his contribution to football despite his omission from the latest list.

Greaves, 80, the greatest goalscorer in English top-flight history, is not included in the Queen’s birthday honours, announced on Saturday. Confirmation of these honours, normally distributed in June, was delayed to acknowledge those who helped the nation fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Our ‘Gong for Greavsie’ campaign, launched to coincide with his 80th birthday in February, was backed by World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst and former Conservative Party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith.

It calls for Greaves to be honoured for his contribution to the national sport — with 357 goals in the old Division One for Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham, 44 in 57 internationals and playing a part in England’s triumphant 1966 World Cup squad.

It would also be recognition for his courage in tackling alcoholism, the support he gave to others struggling with addictions and his broadcasting career.

Greaves has been in poor health since a severe stroke five years ago and Sportsmail will fight for him to be recognised before it is too late.
